Length before pitch. Rhythm is the thing beginners put off longest, and it is the thing that changes the character of a piece most.
When choosing notes, most people start from "which pitch". But the first thing a listener registers is usually the rhythm. So let's change nothing about pitch and compare lengths only.
Note length is really "how many pieces"
Music runs on a steady pulse underneath — the interval you would clap along to. That is the beat, and note lengths are counted in beats. Everything here is in 4/4. The four rows below all last exactly as long as each other; only the number of notes differs.
- Whole note — four beats (one bar in 4/4)
- Half note — two beats
- Quarter note — one beat (the clapping pulse)
- Eighth note — half a beat
The steady pulse running under the music — what you tap your foot to. BPM says how many of those pulses happen in a minute.
Note count sets the mood
Over identical chords, changing how many notes you play changes everything. The two melodies below sit on the same C, G, Am, F. They draw from almost the same pitches; what differs is how many notes there are and how finely they are cut.
- Few notes — reads as calm
C | G | Am | F
- Many notes — reads as forward motion

The sparse one is easier to sing and leaves room for words. The busy one has energy but is hard to fit lyrics into. Neither is correct: verses usually stay sparse and choruses get busier, inside the same song.
